Achanakmar Safari Packages
We plan Achanakmar itineraries around permit availability, travel time from the nearest airport or station, and the zones that suit your priorities, whether that is tigers, birds or a quieter forest. Amit and the My Jungle Junction team handle safari bookings, lodge selection and transfers, and can combine Achanakmar with neighbouring reserves in Chhattisgarh or a wider central India circuit.
How Many Safaris Should You Do in Achanakmar?
Achanakmar is a quiet park with a modest number of routes, so you do not need a long stay to cover it. We usually recommend two or three drives, and pair the reserve with Kanha or Bandhavgarh if you want a longer itinerary with more tiger chances.
Best Safari Zones
The tiger reserve is organised around its core and buffer areas, with forest ranges including Lormi and Kota in the surrounding area. Tourism routes and entry points are controlled by the Chhattisgarh forest department and can change from season to season. We confirm which gates and routes are open for your dates before booking, rather than quoting a fixed gate list that may be out of date.
About 626 sq km of critical tiger habitat, with access controlled by the forest department.
About 288 sq km of buffer forest around the core; tourism may be arranged here.
One of the forest ranges on the reserve's boundary near Lormi town.
Forest range at the boundary of the reserve towards Kota in Bilaspur district.
How to Reach & When to Visit
Raipur's Swami Vivekananda Airport is the main hub; Bilaspur also has a smaller airport. Onward travel is by road, several hours from Raipur.
Bilaspur Junction is the nearest major railhead and a major stop on the Mumbai-Howrah line. Lormi is roughly 80 km from Bilaspur station.
Lormi, the usual gateway, is reached by road from Bilaspur in a couple of hours. We arrange transfers and confirm road conditions.
Winter is pleasant; summer gives better sightings near water.
Cool, clear weather and the most comfortable season. Mornings are chilly, so bring warm layers for early drives.
Hot, but animals gather near water and the thinner foliage helps. Dawn drives only; carry water and sun protection.
Heavy rain and slippery tracks; core areas are generally closed. We do not recommend visiting during these months.
MJJ Insight : Combine Achanakmar with Kanha or Bandhavgarh for a stronger tiger chance; we can plan the drive between them.
The Wildlife of Achanakmar
Achanakmar's key species are tiger, leopard, gaur, sloth bear, wild dog (dhole), sambar, chital, nilgai, barking deer, wild boar and hyena. Birdlife is rich, with hornbills, raptors and woodland species typical of sal forest. Reptiles include monitor lizards and snakes. The forest is dense, so sightings are patient work: a good guide and early starts matter more here than in open grassland parks.
Wildlife Highlights of Achanakmar
There are no widely documented celebrity tigers at Achanakmar. The reserve's story is conservation: the recovery of tigers in a forest that links the Kanha landscape with Chhattisgarh, and the protection of habitat inside a biosphere reserve.
Your Stay in Achanakmar
Facilities near Achanakmar are modest. Most visitors stay in Bilaspur, which has hotels at various price points, or in forest rest houses and basic lodges near Lormi where available. Choose Bilaspur for comfort and easy transport, and the Lormi side for shorter drives to the forest. We confirm availability and book on your behalf, as options near the reserve are limited and change.

Why Should You Visit Achanakmar
Achanakmar matters because it is a link in the chain of forests running from Kanha through the Maikal hills into Chhattisgarh, allowing tigers and other wildlife to move between reserves. It is part of the Achanakmar-Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve, with rich plant life and several streams. For visitors it offers a peaceful alternative to the crowded parks: few vehicles, a patient, naturalist approach, and the chance to see gaur, leopard and birds in genuine forest. It is best as part of a wider central India circuit with Kanha or Bandhavgarh.
