My Jungle Junction's Guide to Kawal Tiger Reserve

The Kawal Tiger Safari Experience

Kawal Wildlife Sanctuary was notified as a tiger reserve in 2012, Telangana's first and India's 42nd. About 893 sq km was set aside as core, with around 1,123 sq km of buffer, giving a total of roughly 2,016 sq km, according to published figures. Some sources quote a slightly different buffer, so figures vary.

The reserve lies in Jannaram mandal of Mancherial district, formerly part of Adilabad. It is about 250 to 270 km from Hyderabad by road, and the sanctuary is around 50 km from Mancherial town.

Safari services have been reported as resuming after a gap, so we confirm current availability with the Jannaram forest office. Two nights suffice, ideally combined with Tadoba or Hyderabad.

Bring cash for the road.

Kawal Safari Packages

My Jungle Junction's Bestselling Kawal Safari Packages

Kawal is remote, so we plan it carefully. Our itineraries cover the long drive from Hyderabad or the train to Mancherial, confirm the Jannaram forest-office safari and boating arrangements, and choose a comfortable base. Many guests link Kawal with Tadoba, giving a two-reserve trip across Telangana and Maharashtra, and we are open about what is and is not likely to be seen.

How Many Safaris Should You Do in Kawal?

Two drives and a boat ride is a good plan

Safari options at Kawal are modest and can change, so we usually recommend two jeep outings, with a boat trip on the reservoir if it is on offer. The forest is large and dense, which makes patience important. Spending time on birds, bison and landscape makes the visit more rewarding than counting on a tiger. Mornings are best for movement.

Two safaris are the practical minimum: a morning and an afternoon in the Jannaram area, enough to see the teak forest, waterholes and the Kadam river side.

Three safaris improves your odds and lets you try different light, or add a reservoir boat trip where it is offered.

Four to six safaris make more sense if you combine Kawal with Tadoba, where the tiger odds are higher, and treat Kawal as the quiet half of the trip.

Kawal suits patient wildlife enthusiasts and those exploring lesser-known reserves, and is less suited to first-time safari-goers wanting regular tiger sightings.

Ask us about timings.

Safari Zones in Kawal

Kawal does not publish numbered safari zones that we can confirm. The reserve's tourism centres on Jannaram, the mandal headquarters, from where jeep safaris and trips to the Kadam reservoir have been organised through Telangana tourism and the forest department. The core forest of roughly 893 sq km is largely closed to visitors, while the buffer is more accessible. Services have paused and resumed in the past, so we confirm the current routes and timings with the Jannaram forest office before every trip.

How to Reach & When to Visit

How to Reach & Best Time to Visit Kawal

✈️

By Air

Hyderabad's Rajiv Gandhi International Airport is the main gateway, about 250 to 270 km from Kawal by road, which is a drive of roughly five to six hours depending on traffic.

πŸš†

By Train

Mancherial station on the main north-south rail line is the nearest railhead, around 50 km from the sanctuary. Trains connect it to Hyderabad, Nagpur and Delhi; taxis cover the last stretch.

πŸš—

By Road

Jannaram, the gateway to Kawal, is around 50 km from Mancherial and 250 to 270 km from Hyderabad by road. A private car is the best option, since public buses to the forest are limited.

Best Time to Visit Kawal

Kawal changes character through the year; here is what each season offers.

πŸ‚
Winter
Nov - Feb

The best season, with cool weather and active wildlife. Dry forest makes spotting easier and roads are in good shape.

β˜€οΈ
Summer
Mar - Jun

Very hot, but animals concentrate at water sources. Keep drives to early morning and late afternoon.

🌧️
Monsoon
Jul - Oct

The monsoon turns the forest green but may limit safaris and make tracks muddy. Check with us before travelling.

MJJ Insight : Tip: Kawal is a long drive from Hyderabad, so give yourself two nights. We confirm the Jannaram safari status before you commit.

The Wildlife of Kawal

Beyond the Tiger: Kawal's Wildlife

Kawal's teak, bamboo and mixed forest supports tiger, leopard, sloth bear, gaur, sambar, chital, nilgai and wild boar, with wild dog and hyena also reported. A travel source puts the tiger count at around 20, though we have not verified that figure with the forest department. The Kadam river and reservoir bring in waterbirds and crocodiles, while the woodland holds peafowl, owls, hornbills and raptors. Because the forest is large and dense, animals are shy and sightings need patience and a good guide.

Tigers of Kawal

A corridor reserve where Tadoba tigers come to settle

Kawal has no celebrity tigers with names and fan followings. Its tigers are mostly animals that have dispersed from Tadoba-Andhari in Maharashtra, some settling here and others passing through. That movement is why the reserve was created, and it makes each sighting special. We share recent camera-trap news with you before each visit, so you know what is realistic and what is hopeful.

Tadoba corridor Jannaram Kadam reservoir Godavari forests

Kawal was declared a tiger reserve in 2012 because of its potential for tigers to migrate from the Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve. Over the years, camera traps and field signs have recorded tigers moving into and through the area.

Because many of these animals are transient, individual tigers do not stay long enough to become well known to visitors, and the forest is large and dense. Unlike Tadoba, you will not find a famous tigress with a following.

We therefore focus on the conservation story: a corridor that works only if forests and villages along it are protected. Your visit supports that work.

Your Stay in Kawal

Your Stay in Kawal

Where to Stay near Kawal

Accommodation is basic and limited. Jannaram has forest-department and Telangana tourism lodging and a few simple hotels, which makes it the most convenient base, though booking ahead is essential. Mancherial, about 50 km away, offers a wider range of hotels and is easier to reach by train. Some travellers choose to stay at Hyderabad and make a long day trip, though this is tiring. Choose by how close you want to be to the forest and how much comfort you need. We help you decide.

βœ• Don'ts

  • βœ• Ask the driver to break rules.

  • βœ• Feed wildlife.
  • βœ• Throw anything from the vehicle.

Why Should You Visit Kawal

Telangana's tiger forest and a link to Tadoba

Kawal matters because it forms part of the tiger landscape that links Maharashtra's Tadoba-Andhari with the forests of Telangana, giving tigers room to disperse. Protecting this forest helps keep that corridor open. For visitors, it is a chance to see a large, relatively unknown reserve, with teak forest, a river valley and very few other tourists. It is the right choice if you enjoy remote places and slow wildlife watching, and it combines well with Tadoba or a Hyderabad heritage trip. If you need near-certain tiger sightings, choose a better-known park first. Your visit also supports local forest staff and village guides.
