My Jungle Junction's Guide to Srivilliputhur-Megamalai Tiger Reserve

The Srivilliputhur-Megamalai Tiger Safari Experience

The reserve was notified by the Environment Ministry on 8 February 2021 as India's 51st tiger reserve and Tamil Nadu's fifth. It covers about 1,017 sq km, with a core of roughly 642 sq km and a buffer of around 375 sq km, in Theni, Virudhunagar and Madurai districts.

The Grizzled Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1988 to protect the grizzled giant squirrel, while the Megamalai sanctuary covers the high-range hills and plantations.

As a new reserve, formal safari routes and permits are still developing, and we confirm current access with the Tamil Nadu Forest Department before booking. Two nights suits most visitors, combined with Madurai, Theni or Periyar.

Srivilliputhur's famous Andal temple makes a rewarding cultural stop before or after your time in the forest.

Srivilliputhur-Megamalai Safari Packages

My Jungle Junction's Bestselling Srivilliputhur-Megamalai Safari Packages

Because this is a recently created reserve, we plan trips here with extra checking. We confirm what the Tamil Nadu Forest Department currently allows, arrange a guide and a base in Srivilliputhur, Theni or Meghamalai, and combine it with Madurai's temples or Periyar over the border in Kerala. If access to a particular area is closed, we offer an alternative so the trip still works.

How Many Safaris Should You Do in Srivilliputhur-Megamalai?

Treat visits as exploration, not a safari checklist

Formal safari routes are limited at present, so we cannot promise a set number of drives. If access is available, plan two outings to see the forest and its high hills, and keep a third day for walking, birdwatching and the plantation roads of Meghamalai. Flexible expectations make for a better visit. Mornings are usually best for birds, so start early and keep afternoons for a plantation walk.

Two outings are the realistic minimum, one in lowland forest and one in the Meghamalai hills, subject to what the forest department allows.

Three outings would add time for birdwatching and a walk in a plantation or forest edge area, which is often more productive than driving.

Four to six outings are best spread across Megamalai and a neighbouring reserve such as Periyar, as the road network in this reserve is limited.

The reserve suits birders, botanists and quiet nature lovers, and is less suitable for those who want a guaranteed tiger or an established safari.

We confirm each area first.

The Wildlife of Srivilliputhur-Megamalai

Beyond the Tiger: Srivilliputhur-Megamalai's Wildlife

Srivilliputhur-Megamalai is home to tiger, leopard, Asian elephant, gaur, sambar and sloth bear, with smaller mammals such as the Nilgiri langur and Nilgiri tahr also reported on higher ground. The grizzled giant squirrel, a Near Threatened species, is the signature animal of the former Srivilliputhur sanctuary. The mix of evergreen forest, grassland and plantation margins supports a rich bird list and many reptiles and amphibians. As the reserve is only recently managed for tourism, many animals are shy and sightings are infrequent.

The Grizzled Giant Squirrel & Wildlife of SMTR

A reserve named for a squirrel, protecting a tiger landscape

Srivilliputhur-Megamalai has no celebrity tigers. Its best-known animal is the grizzled giant squirrel, the reason the Srivilliputhur sanctuary was created in 1988. Elephants, gaur and a developing tiger population make up the rest of the story. Seeing the squirrel high in a canopy is a quiet pleasure, and a good guide will know the stretches of forest where it is most often spotted. We confirm local sightings before your visit.

Grizzled giant squirrel Meghamalai Srivilliputhur Western Ghats

The Srivilliputhur Grizzled Giant Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary was set up in 1988 to protect Ratufa macroura, a large, Near Threatened tree squirrel with a grizzled coat and bushy tail. It remains the most distinctive resident of the reserve.

In 2021, the sanctuary and the neighbouring Megamalai sanctuary were combined and notified as a tiger reserve, bringing stronger protection to the whole landscape.

Tigers are present, but no individual has become well known to visitors. The conservation story, and the forest connection between Periyar and the southern Ghats, is the real draw.

Your guide can point out nest balls high in the trees.

Where to Stay near Srivilliputhur-Megamalai

Accommodation is limited and varies by entry point. Srivilliputhur and Virudhunagar have simple hotels, while Theni and Cumbum offer a broader range. In the Meghamalai hills, plantation guesthouses and small homestays provide a cooler, scenic base, though availability is modest. Madurai has the widest choice if you are happy with a longer drive. Why Should You Visit Srivilliputhur-Megamalai

A newly protected corner of the southern Western Ghats

This reserve matters because it adds a large, continuous block of Western Ghats forest to India's protected tiger landscape, linking with the Periyar and Kalakad-Mundanthurai forests to form a larger southern habitat. For visitors, it offers a chance to explore a forest before it becomes busy, with the grizzled giant squirrel, high hills and tea estates as highlights. It also suits those combining wildlife with temples and hill-station scenery. If you enjoy discovery and are comfortable with uncertainty, it is a rewarding stop on a southern India itinerary. Visiting thoughtfully also supports local guides, drivers and plantation homestays at an early stage in the reserve's life.
