Palamau Safari Packages
We plan Palamau itineraries around permit availability, travel time from the nearest airport or station, and the zones that suit your priorities, whether that is tigers, birds or a quieter forest. Amit and the My Jungle Junction team handle safari bookings, lodge selection and transfers, and can combine Palamau with neighbouring reserves in Jharkhand or a wider central India circuit.
How Many Safaris Should You Do in Palamau?
Palamau's tourism area is compact, so a few well-timed drives usually cover what visitors can reach. We recommend two or three safaris at Betla, adding more if you want to spend time at Kechki or explore the surrounding landscape and forts as part of a longer stay.
Best Safari Zones
Tourism at Palamau centres on Betla National Park, which has a regulated tourist zone with set routes. About 53 sq km of the buffer is marked as tourist zone. Kechki, at the confluence of the Koel and Auranga rivers, is another popular area, along with the Palamau Forts. Specific gate names and routes are managed by the Jharkhand forest department, so we confirm availability and booking arrangements on your dates before finalising an itinerary.

How to Reach & When to Visit
Birsa Munda Airport, Ranchi is the nearest major airport, with flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and other cities. Betla is reached by road, a few hours away.
Daltonganj and Barwadih are the nearest railheads, with Barwadih Junction closest to Betla. Ranchi is the main station for long-distance trains.
Betla is in Latehar district, reached by road from Ranchi in roughly four hours. We arrange the transfer and confirm current road conditions.
Winter is the most comfortable season; summer gives the best sightings.
Pleasant, clear weather and the most comfortable season for travel and drives. Mornings can be cold.
Hot and dry; animals gather at waterholes and elephants are seen more easily. Dawn drives only.
Rain and slippery tracks; the park generally closes during the monsoon. We do not recommend visiting in these months.
MJJ Insight : Book safari permissions and Betla forest-department stays well ahead for winter weekends; we handle both for our guests.
The Wildlife of Palamau
Palamau is known for its Asian elephants, which are often the most reliably seen large animal. Other mammals include tiger, leopard, gaur, sambar, chital, barking deer, nilgai, wild boar, sloth bear, wild dog (dhole), hyena and Indian wolf in the wider landscape. Langurs and rhesus macaques are common near waterholes. Birdlife is excellent, with hornbills, raptors and forest species, and the rivers attract waders. The dense sal forest makes tiger sightings uncommon, so we focus on the whole ecosystem rather than a single species.
Wildlife Highlights of Palamau
Palamau does not have a celebrity tiger, but it has a famous place in conservation history, with one of the earliest pugmark-based tiger counts in India. Today, its elephants are the main draw, along with the Betla forest and nearby forts.
Your Stay in Palamau
Most visitors stay at Betla, the village at the edge of the national park, where there are Jharkhand Tourism lodges, forest rest houses and a few private hotels. Staying in Betla means short drives for dawn safaris and easy access to Kechki and the forts. If you want more comfort, Ranchi has hotels of all categories and Daltonganj offers basic options. We choose based on comfort, budget and how much time you want to spend driving, and we book on your behalf.

Why Should You Visit Palamau
Palamau matters for its place in Indian conservation history. It was among the original nine Project Tiger reserves, and it was here that early pugmark-based tiger counting methods were tried in the 1930s. Today it protects a large forest block on the Chota Nagpur plateau and a good population of elephants. For visitors, it is a quieter alternative to the busier parks, with the added attraction of the Palamau Forts, the Koel and Auranga rivers and tribal culture nearby. It suits travellers who enjoy history, birds and landscapes as well as large mammals.
