My Jungle Junction's Guide to Ratapani Tiger Reserve

The Ratapani Tiger Safari Experience

Ratapani's two best-known safari gates are Jhiri and Delawadi, both within easy reach of Bhopal. A morning and afternoon drive fits into a single day, though two nights lets you add a visit to the nearby Bhimbetka rock shelters, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with some of India's oldest known rock art.

The sanctuary was first notified in 1976, and the NTCA gave an in-principle approval for tiger-reserve status in 2008. The formal notification came in December 2024, making it Madhya Pradesh's eighth tiger reserve and the 57th in India. Official area figures differ between sources, so we refer to it as roughly 1,271 square kilometres in total.

The reserve will be named after the archaeologist Vishnu Wakankar, who is closely linked with Bhimbetka, which ties the reserve to the region's human history as well as its wildlife.

Ratapani Safari Packages

My Jungle Junction's Bestselling Ratapani Safari Packages

We plan Ratapani itineraries around the way the park actually works, not a generic template. Ratapani is close to Bhopal, so we often build it as a short first leg or a weekend add-on, and we check gate availability and permits for your dates. Amit and the team book permits and vehicles early, choose lodges for the gate you will use, and can combine Ratapani with Satpura, Pench or Kanha so the trip has a sensible rhythm. Tell us your dates and group, and we will build around them.

How Many Safaris Should You Do in Ratapani?

A Compact Safari Stop

Ratapani is a short-stay reserve. Most guests take two to four safaris, either as a weekend from Bhopal or as the opening leg of a longer central India trip. Because the reserve is newly declared and still developing, sightings are mixed, and you will enjoy it most as a pleasant forest drive with a chance of a tiger rather than a promise.

Two safaris, usually one morning and one afternoon, suit a day trip from Bhopal or a stopover before Satpura or Pench.

Three or four safaris over two nights are a better test. You can use both Jhiri and Delawadi, and add a visit to Bhimbetka, which makes for a rounded trip.

Five or six safaris are rarely needed unless you are a photographer who wants to learn the forest. Ratapani suits time-pressed travellers, families and culture-minded guests. For tiger-sighting odds, we pair it with Kanha, Bandhavgarh or Pench, where the park is built around a larger population.

Safari Gates in Ratapani

Ratapani Tiger Reserve's main tourism gates are Jhiri and Delawadi, both within about an hour or two of Bhopal. The Madhya Pradesh forest portal lists permit fees for both, with vehicle charges varying between the gates, and we check the current rates for you. A separate Bhimbetka gate is also mentioned on the forest portal, though the rock shelters themselves are a heritage site managed separately. Total area figures differ between sources, and we have not been able to confirm the exact core and buffer split for tourism. We advise booking in advance and arriving early, as the gate openings and quotas can change.

Jhiri Gate

One of the two main safari gates. Permit and vehicle fees are set by the forest department.

Delawadi Gate

The second main safari gate. Vehicle fees differ from Jhiri, so check at booking.

Bhimbetka Side

The forest portal lists a Bhimbetka gate near the UNESCO rock shelters, roughly 40-45 km from Bhopal. Access should be checked with us.

The Wildlife of Ratapani

Beyond the Tiger: Ratapani's Wildlife

Ratapani's forest is home to tiger and leopard, along with sloth bear, hyena, jackal and other smaller carnivores. Herbivores include sambar, chital, nilgai and wild boar. The Barna reservoir and surrounding forest bring a good bird list, with raptors, storks and hornbills among the sightings. Because the area is relatively new as a tiger reserve and the forest is dry deciduous, the animals can be shy in thick cover. The best sightings often come at waterholes and along open ridges in the early morning.

Ratapani's Story

From sanctuary to Madhya Pradesh's eighth tiger reserve

Ratapani has no widely known named tiger that we can verify. Its story is one of long waiting. Tiger-reserve status was approved in principle in 2008 but notified only in December 2024. It will carry the name of Vishnu Wakankar, the archaeologist linked with Bhimbetka, which ties the reserve to the region's human history as well as its wildlife.

Jhiri gate Delawadi gate Bhimbetka Barna reservoir Bhopal

Ratapani was a wildlife sanctuary from 1976, and its tiger population grew over the years, helped by animals dispersing from nearby areas. The in-principle approval for tiger reserve status in 2008 was followed by a long delay.

The state issued the notification on 2 December 2024, making it Madhya Pradesh's eighth tiger reserve and the 57th in the country. The reserve is to be named after Vishnu Wakankar, who is associated with the discovery of the Bhimbetka rock shelters.

Reports have pointed to early teething problems as management adapts to the new status. For visitors, the practical meaning is a reserve that is still developing, with growing numbers of tigers and a very convenient location.

Your Stay in Ratapani

Your Stay in Ratapani

Where to Stay in Ratapani

Most visitors stay in Bhopal, which has a wide choice of hotels from budget to heritage, and drive out for the safari. A few resorts and homestays are found closer to the gates, towards Obaidullaganj and Sehore. If you want a forest atmosphere, ask us for lodges near Jhiri or Delawadi. Choose by gate, because the two sides of the reserve are some distance apart. For an easy trip, base yourself in Bhopal and add a visit to Bhimbetka and the old city. We recommend booking early in the winter season.

Why Should You Visit Ratapani

A real tiger reserve within an hour of a state capital

Ratapani shows how close wildlife can be to a city. You can have breakfast in Bhopal and be in tiger habitat by mid-morning, then visit rock shelters painted thousands of years ago. Tigers have been recorded in the forest for some years, and the formal tiger-reserve notification in late 2024 gives the area a stronger future. It will not match the sightings of Kanha or Bandhavgarh, and we say so. But for a short break, a first safari with children or a culture-and-wildlife itinerary, it is convenient and genuinely interesting. It also fits neatly with Satpura and Pachmarhi.
