My Jungle Junction

Orang National Park & Tiger Reserve

Often called Mini Kaziranga, Orang is a quiet Brahmaputra floodplain reserve with rhinos, elephants and tigers. It is easy to add to a Guwahati start or a Kaziranga trip, with far fewer crowds.

My Jungle Junction's Guide to Orang Tiger Reserve

The Orang Tiger Safari Experience

Orang was notified as a tiger reserve in February 2016, as Assam's fourth, covering about 492 sq km according to reports, of which roughly 79 sq km is core. The reserve is within the Mangaldoi wildlife division, and is sometimes written up as part of a larger Brahmaputra grassland landscape.

Orang National Park is the heart of the reserve. Jeep safaris are the main activity, with an early-morning and afternoon slot, and elephant rides may be offered when permitted. Facilities are simpler than in Kaziranga and tourist numbers are low.

We recommend one or two nights, ideally as part of a longer Assam trip. Check current access with us before travelling. Your naturalist will help you read the landscape, and we will brief you on rules, timings and what to pack before you leave.

Orang Safari Packages

My Jungle Junction's Bestselling Orang Safari Packages

Amit and the My Jungle Junction team plan every Orang itinerary around the way the reserve actually works: which gates are open, how far lodges sit from the entry points, and how many days you need before the landscape starts to give things up. We handle permits, vehicle bookings, naturalist guides and transfers from the nearest airport or station, and we build in spare time so a closed gate or a wet road does not cost you a safari.

How Many Safaris Should You Do in Orang?

Quiet jeep drives on the floodplain

Orang is a short-visit park, usually covered with two to three jeep safaris over one or two nights, in the early morning and late afternoon. The grassland and wetlands are open, so wildlife is easy to spot when it is there. We confirm vehicle, permit and gate arrangements before you travel, since facilities are simpler than at the larger parks.

Two safaris, one morning and one afternoon, give you a good look at Orang's rhinos, wetlands and birds. It is enough for a stop on a longer Assam trip.

Three safaris over two nights give you more time at the waterholes and a better chance of tiger signs, elephants and wild buffalo. This is our recommendation if Orang is a destination in its own right.

Four or more safaris are rarely needed at a small reserve like this. Orang suits families, first-timers and anyone who prefers quiet. If a tiger sighting is the goal, pair it with a longer stay at Kaziranga or Manas.

Best Safari Zones

Safari Zones in Orang

Orang does not use a numbered zone system like the Central Indian parks. Tourism is centred on the Orang National Park area in the Mangaldoi wildlife division, where jeep safaris follow tracks across the grassland and wetlands. Mangaldoi is the nearest town and the practical gateway. Exact safari routes, gates and any additional ranges are set by the forest department and may change, so we confirm the current arrangements and book the entry and vehicle for you before you travel.

Orang National Park Gate

Main tourist entry for jeep safaris across the grassland and wetlands. Check current gate details.

Mangaldoi

Nearest town and divisional headquarters, the practical base for transport and provisions.

Wetlands and Beels

Seasonal wetlands inside the park attracting rhinos, buffalo and waterbirds.

Brahmaputra Bank

Edge of the floodplain, a scenic area for birds and river views where access allows.

By Train

Rangapara North and Mangaldoi-area stations are the closest, and Guwahati is the main hub. A road transfer is needed from any of them.

By Road

Orang is on the north bank of the Brahmaputra, reached via Mangaldoi. From Guwahati the drive is around three to four hours. We arrange the transfer.

Best Time to Visit Orang

Winter and early spring are the best; the monsoon floods the area.

πŸ‚
Winter
Oct - Feb

Cool, dry and clear. This is the main season, with the best visibility on grassland and wetlands.

β˜€οΈ
Summer
Mar - Jun

Hot and humid, with pre-monsoon showers. Wildlife gathers around water, but the heat is strong.

🌧️
Monsoon
Jul - Sep

Floods and heavy rain. The park is usually closed, and we do not plan visits in this season.

MJJ Insight : Facilities and gate arrangements at Orang are simpler than at Kaziranga. Ask us to confirm vehicles and permits a week before you travel, and plan to stay one night rather than rely on same-day entry.

The Wildlife of Orang

Beyond the Tiger: Orang's Wildlife

Orang is best known for greater one-horned rhinoceros, which graze on its grassland and wetlands. Other species include tiger, leopard, Asian elephant, wild water buffalo, hog deer, wild boar, jungle cat and fishing cat. The Brahmaputra brings in dolphin and river birds. Birdwatchers can find Bengal florican, spot-billed pelican, adjutant storks, black-necked stork, lesser whistling duck and many migratory ducks in winter. Reptile species include rock python and monitor lizard. Because the park is small, animals are fairly concentrated, which helps sightings.

Wildlife and Conservation at Orang

Mini Kaziranga on the north bank

Orang has no individually famous tigers that guides name. Its fame is as Mini Kaziranga, a rhino reserve that became Assam's fourth tiger reserve in 2016 and is part of a wider push to protect Brahmaputra grassland habitats. Ask your naturalist about recent camera-trap news, sightings and pugmarks, because that is where the real stories of this reserve are told.

Mini Kaziranga One-horned rhino Mangaldoi Brahmaputra Grassland

Orang has no celebrity tigers. Tigers are present but rarely seen, and visitors usually leave talking about rhinos instead.

The reserve's conservation story is its declaration. In February 2016, Assam notified the then Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park as a tiger reserve, the state's fourth, after approval from the National Tiger Conservation Authority. It was later renamed Orang National Park.

Orang sits in a wider landscape of Brahmaputra grassland, wetland and forest that connects to other reserves. Protecting it matters for rhinos and tigers moving along the river. Ask your guide about recent rhino counts and any news. Your naturalist can share the latest news from the reserve and what recent surveys have found.

Your Stay in Orang

Your Stay in Orang

Where to Stay in Orang

Orang is a small, quiet reserve with fewer lodges than Kaziranga. Many guests stay at forest-department or private guesthouses near the park gate, or in Mangaldoi, which offers hotels and basic comforts. Some travellers use Tezpur or Guwahati as a base and visit Orang on a day trip, though early-morning starts make a night near the park far better. Choose by distance from the gate, the comfort you want and whether you are heading to Kaziranga next. We can help you pick a stay and book it.

Why Should You Visit Orang

A quieter, smaller alternative to Kaziranga

Orang offers a version of Kaziranga with very few other people. Its grassland, wetlands and Brahmaputra backdrop are similar, and the greater one-horned rhinoceros is easy to see. As a tiger reserve since 2016, it is also part of a broader Brahmaputra grassland landscape that matters for tigers, elephants and rhinos moving between the north bank reserves. The experience is gentle, short and affordable, which makes Orang a good add-on to a Guwahati start, or an alternative for travellers who find Kaziranga too busy. Come for the rhinos, enjoy the quiet, and treat any tiger sighting as luck. It is a trip that rewards patience and curiosity.
